Once, while running the game I was using mind flayers as the centerpiece villains...but during the session I forgot to bring the stats for mind flayers with me to my friend's house where we were playing. So I flipped through my B/X books to see what I could quickly reskin as a mind flayer-type monster.
I used carrion crawlers for mind flayers.
It makes a certain amount of sense. I mean, look at them, their heads are kinda the same, right?
Their shticks are also pretty similar: they both paralyze you so they can eat you. Worked out just fine.
Could be fun to make the crawler the caterpillar that becomes the pretty pretty flayer butterfly.

DeleteI've done that myself.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should form a support group.
DeleteWasn't there a Dragon magazine article that linked the Carrion Crawler to the Illithid's home world?
ReplyDeleteNo idea! That would be cool if there were, though.
DeleteI remember the dragon article your talking about (which had an associated article that gave several other animals from their planet), but I don't remember if it mentioned carrion crawlers, though.
DeleteThat's good. Sometimes even better than just 'reskinning' a monster, as you say, is creating a community or hierarchy of such monsters. Stick versions of that head on some spiders and a few birds and give them limited psionics and you have the beginnings of Creepy Island.
